Celebrating Small Things

One of the things I keep hearing over and over during the pandemic is that my friends feel like they aren't "working enough" because they are now working from home. I feel the same way even though my semester is almost over-- the line between work and home has been blurred and I feel like I'm never putting in enough hours a day. Don't get me wrong-- I am very grateful to be able to work from home and I know thousands of people don't get that luxury. But it made me realize (like thousands of other people I know or encounter online) that this obsession with "busy-ness" and the idea of wearing our frenetic work lives like badges of honor is exhausting.

So, because I am a list maker, I've decided to compile a few lists to share here. I want to celebrate the small things, the quiet things, the things that represent self-care or self-expression.

Personally, I've been baking a lot more. I used to bake all the time and even supplied a local coffee shop with truffles once upon a time. It's been fun for that part of me to reemerge.

So far, I have baked:

+A vanilla two layer cake

+An apple pie with a crumble top

+Pineapple Cherry White Chocolate chip cookies

+Dark chocolate cookies (with white chocolate chips)

+Brownies from scratch (as of today!)

I've been able to read for fun (usually an activity reserved for summers):

+The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides (more on this book later)

+ Talking to the Dead by Helen Dunmore (a re-read)

+ Let Us Build Us a City by Donald Harrington

+ Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut

...and I am in the process of reading This Side of Paradise by Fitzgerald and a collection of poetry by Tracy K. Smith called Life on Mars.

I go for more walks now. I am beginning to try new craft projects (weaving and macrame). I'm still watching tv, lol. I might get back into writing creatively.

I hope these lists inspire you to make some of your own. To take stock and reflect on what things you are doing, no matter how great or small, and to celebrate them. The world needs more joy.

I'm excited to start posting about the prop work I will be doing this summer as well as about books, movies, art, etc. I'm also hoping to invite some guest writers. Stay tuned and thank you for reading!
