Summer Reading List

My school year is finally over and grades have been turned in! What a strange way to conclude a semester-- online, solitary, and digital. I'm moving to full time teaching this fall and I'm very excited. The school I teach at assigns summer reading for students and I thought I'd share what I'm assigning mine (any teachers in the crowd?)

Even if you aren't a teacher, these books might be interesting to you! Last summer, my mom ended up reading what was on the 9th grade list after we talked about what I was assigning and she really enjoyed it!

7th Grade Summer Reading:

+The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton (required read)

Additional reading (students choose one from the list)

+Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell
+The Giver by Lois Lowry
+The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff (she deserves her own post!)
+The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi

9th Grade Summer Reading:

+The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho (required)

Additional reading (students choose one)

+Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel
+Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Das Sijie
+Code Talker by Joseph Bruhac
+Life of Pi by Yann Martel

AP Literature Summer Reading:

+Born of Crime by Trevor Noah
+Educated by Tara Westover
(both are required)

I'm looking forward to reading/re-visiting these works over the summer. I hope you take a moment to check out a few of the titles listed above. In addition to occasional posts about teaching, I promise-- prop making posts will be on the horizon!
